Your body is on the trail but your head is still inside. The unfinished email. The open tabs. The conversation you keep replaying. The trail keeps going. It always has.
Growing up, the quiet came free.
I’m one of the rare few born and raised in Banff. I started skiing when I was so small that the chairlift hit me in the back of the head. Halloween required an inside costume and an outside costume, built to fit over a snowsuit. My first job was in retail on Banff Avenue. Tourists would ask if we painted the lakes that blue—or when we let the wildlife out. Eventually, I wondered about the world outside our tiny town.
I moved to New York City for a corporate job, and life became action items, “circling back” and screens glowing at night.
It looked stable. Successful, even. But I started to feel the pull. So I came back. Climbed some 11,000ers. I learned to backcountry ski, to lead climb, to trail run. I’ve been putting myself outside my comfort zone and figuring things out as I go.
Somewhere above the treeline, your mind leaves the indoors and joins you on the trail. Cold air pours off the snowfield and takes the warmth straight out of you. The valley is in shadow now. You didn’t notice it cross.
You stop checking the time. Not suddenly. Just less often. You’re just in it, part hungry, part tired, properly cold.
Eventually, you’re back at the treeline. Then the trailhead. The front door. The tabs are still open. The cursor blinks. But a part of you is still above the treeline. That’s the spirit behind this issue.
This summer, stay at the edge a little longer. Step outside what you know. Try that route you keep eyeing. Be bad at something new. Climb something that makes you a little nervous. Say yes before you’re ready.
