The new Altamesa 500 V2 (for women or men) is a maximal trail runner with an emphasis on long-haul comfort. The generous cushion, roomy fit and light weight stand out immediately. It feels protective and easygoing underfoot, setting the tone for steady miles rather than aggressive high-speed efforts.
Fit and Ride: Comfort Over Lockdown
I have wide-ish feet and the fit was slightly roomy on me, but nothing a cushioned sock can’t solve. The forefoot is generous enough to allow for healthy toe-splay. For lower-volume feet, the hold is adequate but not race-tight (but again, a technical sock would improve this). Generally, the shoe feels pitched more toward all-day comfort rather than ultra-precision control. But over moderate terrain, this is a plus (the shoe feels relaxed and forgiving) but on rough and steep trails, the lack of an ultra locked-in feel calls for a little caution.
Midsole and Upper: Lightweight Bounce, No Hot Spots
The upper is exceptionally comfy, with padding in the tongue and heel collar and no noticeable pressure points. Underfoot, the Dream Foam midsole (a nitrogen-infused TPU compound) delivers a blend of cushioning and energy return, the latter especially impressive considering the 40 mm stack height. The ride is lively without feeling overly soft, and there’s enough protection in the forefoot to forgo a rock plate while still maintaining decent terrain feel. The upper also breathes exceptionally well.
Rocky Terrain: Plenty of Upsides, a Few Limitations
Where the Altamesa 500 V2 shows its limits is over loose, jagged or tight uneven rocks. (That would be the domain of The North Face’s slightly pricier VECTIV Enduris.) The high stack and broad “mattressy” platform is remarkably forgiving on middling terrain (which is most of what I run) but slightly less so when navigating tricky rocks. That said, this is a common tradeoff in this category and no similarly cushioned shoes would perform better. The foam strikes a balance: soft and energetic without the instability sometimes associated with expanded TPU midsoles. A slightly firmer forefoot (with what TNF calls “zonal reinforcement”) adds subtle stability without resorting to rigid plating, thus preserving foot-strike precision.

Outsole and Versatility: Trail-to-Road Crossover Strength
The Surface CTRL outsole complements the shoe’s geometry well, contributing to both stability and a smooth transition through the stride. The rockered design rolls efficiently and despite 4 mm lugs, the outsole remains unobtrusive on pavement, which isn’t always the case with a trail shoe. Grip is solid across most conditions, with improved performance on wet surfaces, though wet rocks will always be slippery and call for a cautious approach no matter what you’re wearing.
Overall Performance: A Reliable Trail Cruiser
The Altamesa 500 V2 embodies what many runners want in a trail shoe today: cushioned, smooth-riding and versatile. It transitions well between trail, gravel and hardpack, offering a refined ride that feels almost like a road shoe on smoother surfaces while remaining composed on dirt or rock.
The tradeoff is clear: on highly technical terrain, the high stack and softer platform can feel slightly woozy. But it offers a nonetheless broad appeal across a wide range of distances and surfaces. –Ned Morgan
