In less than 20 years, the mountain biking options near Quebec City have grown from a handful of routes to an extensive network of trails winding through the forest and surrounding landscape. A provincial capital rarely has this many trails within an hour’s drive of its downtown core. Here are our favourites in four of the area’s most beautiful mountain biking centres. For experienced riders only!

Empire 47

Virtually unknown just a few years ago, Empire 47 in Lac-Delage recently upped its trail game. Among its new signature circuits, the Descente du coude offers enduro experts a challenging 1.5-kilometre trail with a series of jumps, wooden bridges and technical rock-strewn terrain; a good mix that’s sure to keep even the best on their toes.

Vallée Bras-du-Nord

There are very few mountain biking destinations in Quebec where you can ride so close to the water. The Vallée Bras-du-Nord, in the Portneuf area, boasts a vast trail network along its eponymous river, with views of spectacular waterfalls. This is the case for Légende, a 2.8-kilometre trail that offers a refreshing descent to the foot of the Chute à Gilles. It’s perfect on a hot summer day as it alternates between shaded undergrowth and cool waterfall spray.

Sentiers du Moulin

Want to enjoy a downhill ride just outside Quebec City that will make you feel as though you’ve been transported to Squamish, the bike mecca of western Canada? If so, the Maelstrom circuit, part of the Sentiers du Moulin, will do just that. It takes you through a towering forest along a rugged mountaintop. The Slab City trail winds through 1.4 kilometres of granite—a flow trail rivalling some of the best circuits in British Columbia.

Mont Sainte-Anne

The history of Quebec’s mountain biking scene is closely linked to Mont Sainte-Anne. This destination hosted the World Championships three times and offers an exceptional array of quality trails well-known throughout North America. Among its emblematic routes is La Bête: a steep, rocky descent down the side of the most beautiful coastal mountain in the area.  – Frédérique Sauvée

#ThrowbackThursday 👉Rhythmic raindrops pounded on the truck’s canopy. Wet snow avalanches growled down the slopes, and the river echoed its roar—evidence the Nass Valley’s spirit was very alive. FRIDAY FLICK 💥 This past March, speed mountaineer Benedikt Böhm @benediktboehm rocked a five-hour sea-to-summit expedition up Mount Parnassus in central Greece. Starting at sea level on his road bike at the village of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth, he climbed up to an altitude of 2.414 metres. #linkinbio to watch the film!
I had no idea what to expect from this trip, neither from bikepacking, a fancy term for cycle touring and a sport I’d never done before, nor from Kyrgyzstan, a country most people cannot find on a map. Carl, who I’d only just met recently after moving to Canada—I’d flagged him down after backcountry skiing after seeing his Montana license plate—had invited me on this trip while on a mountain bike ride. I said no. A few weeks later I figured, “Why not?”

"@normhann and I lashed paddleboards to the roof of his truck and headed north along the Island Highway, towards Telegraph Cove. Norm had invited me to tag along on a commercial paddleboard group he would be guiding in the Broughton Archipelago. Despite a long history of SUP expeditions, I harboured some reservations."
