It’s hard not to be blown away by how far outdoor gear has come. I grew up skiing in jeans and wool mittens, just for some context. Crafted from 100% pre-consumer recycled Japanese nylon and weighing in at 181 g/m², this material strikes an almost mythical balance of durability, breathability and weatherproofing. Certified by the Global Recycled Standard and developed in Japan—where precision and quality are second nature—this fabric delivers best-of-best, créme-de-la-créme performance.
This jacket isn’t just built for the mountains—it’s built for mountain people. Sometimes well-made outdoor clothing just makes you feel so damn good at first try-on. Pockets have been repositioned and enlarged to accommodate alpine necessities. The helmet-compatible hood is significantly bigger and more functional than before. Even the collar’s ventilation system has been redesigned for enhanced breathability. But what really blows me away is how put together it feels. Despite its extensive feature set—seven pockets, powder skirt, ventilation zippers—nothing feels cluttered or unnecessary. It’s that perfect blend of simplicity and capability, with monochrome styling that’s timeless and versatile. I felt more confident skiing with this jacket, period.
The Stellar Shell Pants are every bit as thoughtfully designed as the jacket. Built with the same Dermizax™NX fabric, they deliver exceptional durability, breathability, and waterproof performance. The fit is athletic yet accommodating—though slightly snug in the waist and crotch for broader builds, the leg length is perfect, with just the right cut to keep you from scuffing them during long days in boots. From steep boot-packs to deep powder turns, the pants move effortlessly with you, never feeling restrictive.
Of course the pants also bring some serious features to the party, including full-length side zippers for ventilation and easy on-and-off changes, an adjustable waist system for a customized fit, and reinforced cuffs that shrug off crampon scrapes and ski edge nicks. Paired with the jacket, this system feels seamless, keeping you dry and comfortable while handling everything from backcountry missions to resort storm laps or bluebird groomer days.

Stellar’s updated size guide delivers. I’m a true “smedium,” and the small fits perfectly. It’s snug with a thin down layer underneath, and while the pants are slightly snug in the waist, the length is spot-on—no scuffing after days of skiing. - The Feel
Beyond looking good, this jacket feels incredible. Lightweight yet durable, it moves with you effortlessly, whether you’re ascending a skin track or dropping into a powder field. - Simplicity
Despite its features, it’s never over-engineered. Everything is in the right place, and you never feel like you’re fumbling to find what you need. - The Price
At $799, it’s an investment, but you get what you pay for: innovation, durability, and a jacket that will last you for years of on-mountain abuse. - The Detail Even the ventilated mesh bag that comes with the system is a great value-add that makes storage and travel super easy and organized.
What We Didn’t Like
- Honestly? Not much. If we’re nitpicking, the pants could use a little more room in the waist/crotch for broader builds.
- Weight: While not overly heavy, this system leans more towards durability than ultralight minimalism. Hardcore backcountry skiers counting grams might want to consider this when planning long tours.
