In 2011, Boulder, Colorado-based Jeremy Nelson, a mechanical engineer, wanted to help his marathoner wife, Adriana Nelson, recover faster between training sessions. After tinkering with prototypes in his garage, the recovery products he conceived—and ROLL Recovery, the company he founded—have led the way in a burgeoning industry.

ROLL Recovery is now a leader in recovery and athletic performance products and innovators in deep-tissue massage therapy. Olympians, pro athletes, NASA astronauts, as well as countless outdoor enthusiasts are now using these products, which include the R1 and R8 Plus massage devices.
We recently tried out the R4 Body Roller, for which ROLL Recovery designers took feedback from elite athletes and physical therapists.

As with every ROLL Recovery product, every aspect and component has been perfected and then perfected again. They’ve optimized the size, surface texture, material density and shape to target specific muscle groups on a deep-tissue level. The key focus points are the center groove to align with the spine and neck, along with a profile to help loosen tight IT bands, calf muscles and many other areas of the body including quads, hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors.
The feel of the R4 with its proprietary high-density EVA foam hits that sweet spot between cushion and resistance, so it doesn’t hurt to use, but firmly engages the muscle groups it needs to. And the engineered ABS core is tough enough to stand many years of heavy use.
We wholeheartedly recommend this easy-to-use but highly effective recovery massager following a hard trail run, MTB, climb or backcountry ski to soothe and treat all the major muscle groups in short order. Just five minutes with the R4 after a long, punishing trail run left us feeling more flexible, less achy and eager for the next phase of our day.
