The latest shoe to feature On’s CloudTec Phase—a midsole foam technology that collapses in sequence, promoting smoother transitions—the Cloudsurfer Next (for women and men) is firmer and slightly more responsive than the original Cloudsurfer.

The Cloudsurfer Next is suited to both daily kilometres and shorter track blasts.
Unlike the Cloudstratus and Cloudmonster, the Cloudsurfer Next doesn’t feature a Speedboard (a midsole plate that bends and flexes with your run, to push you forward). This means a more forgiving underfoot ride (but with a little less propulsion).
At the same time, the forefoot rocker design aids some propulsion, making this a very balanced road shoe for speed, responsiveness and cushion.

With its race shoe heritage, the Cloudsurfer Next boasts an ultralight woven (mostly seamless) upper for excellent ventilation, while the tongue and heel collar are well-padded for comfort.
With a decent (but not outsized) stack height, you still feel closely connected to the road surface, making it easier to vary your pace and take corners with agility and confidence.
Our tester Susan commented: “I find the Cloudsurfer Next cushioning level to be ideal for my medium-paced training runs on pavement, concrete or crushed stone. It feels very flowy at this pace. For faster runs, the midsole offers decent propulsion, though doesn’t spring back like a plated shoe (e.g., the Cloudmonster). But I appreciate the rubber pads on the outsole to help me grip if I vary my pace a little. Lately I’ve been running 4 km intervals or shorter and I find the Cloudsurfer next perfect for these distances.”

Since the forefoot isn’t exceptionally wide or narrow (but strikes a decent middle ground), the Cloudsurfer Next will accommodate a range of foot shapes. The midfoot and ankle also offer a stable lockdown under pressure. This shoe is agile, lightweight and exceptionally versatile—a reliable go-to for daily pavement training.
