Have you ever felt a moment of sheer bliss when hiking? Immersed in a lush wilderness with your fun-loving crew, you’re on the verge of peak happiness on that coveted mountaintop—and then the drama begins. Excruciating foot pain shatters your euphoria. Your compressed toes are turning blue. Your heel is covered with raw blisters. And your instep is killing you. Isn’t hiking supposed to be enjoyable?

PDP Ridge W Lifestyle 1

If you’re having serious doubts about it, maybe that’s because you haven’t thought about hiking in slippers. Not the ones you wear in your living room at night while sipping herbal tea. We’re talking about hiking shoes that become your best walking buddies the instant you slip them on. You don’t have to break them in before your first big hike. There’s no need to wear two pairs of socks to avoid rubbing as a well-meaning friend has recommended. Those perfect shoes keep you safe and comfortable throughout your hike.

But it’s not always easy to find the footwear that will bring you joy. It took me many months, even years of suffering before I finally unearthed my favourite pair. I had already heard about how KEEN was one of the most comfortable shoe brands on the market. I had tried out their iconic water sandals a few summers back, and I was fully satisfied with them. Then, one fine morning, THE pair arrived on my doorstep. KEEN’s Ridge Flex doesn’t have a revolutionary design and isn’t unbeatably lightweight. What makes these shoes unique is how comfortable they are.

First of all, your toes will be comfy in a roomier front that prevents them from being compressed at the end of the shoe. Your ankle stays comfortable thanks to a system of adjustable straps that goes all the way to the back of the heel. But you especially notice the comfort of your instep, where a crease usually forms with each stride. Thanks to its soft accordion-style rubber, KEEN.Bellows Flex technology requires 60% less energy to bend at the forefoot compared to a conventional shoe. That’s a major gain during a multi-day hike or an ascent that calls for a lot of foot flexibility.

The difference in pliability was obvious when I first wore Ridge Flexes hiking. When I reached the mountaintop, that feeling of tired, swollen, compressed feet was gone. As a bonus that came with their super grippy soles and reinforcement to protect the toes, these shoes restored my confidence that my feet could make it to the summit, whatever the number of kilometres or altitude gain. I’ve definitely found my favourite pair of hiking slippers and ecstatic comfort in nature.
