In May of 1969, North Vancouverites Barry and Margaret Higgins wrapped their newborn daughter Keeley in a blanket and brought her, in an apple box, across Howe Sound to their newly-purchased island hideaway on Gambier Island.
🌲The outdoor community has the skills and knowledge needed on the frontlines to help defend Ada’itsx (Fairy Creek, near Port Renfrew, B.C.) one of the last remaining intact old-growth watersheds on Vancouver Island. Now that the provincial travel restrictions are lifting, many outdoor enthusiasts, from around B.C. and beyond, are feeling the call to get involved but wondering what we need to know first. After visiting the blockades and working to understand the events leading up to such extreme measures as putting one’s body on the line to protect old-growth trees, here’s what I’ve learned.
First documented in the fifth century BC by the Greek physician Hippocrates, hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water at any temperature, including ice plunges and hot baths. Ancient Egyptians added flower essences and aromatic oils to bathwater to promote healing, while for ancient Romans, the communal bath was a way of life. In Greece, Hippocrates advocated bathing in spring water and North America’s Aboriginal peoples worshiped the healing powers of hot springs and cold-water pools for thousands of years, considering them gifts from their gods. Today, not much has changed.
