Stand-up paddleboarding has been around for as long as surfing itself. The earliest known eyewitness account of the sport, by British explorer James Cook in 1770s Tahiti, mentions surfers using paddles. Since at least the 1960s, surfing instructors have used paddles to teach beginners. And over the last decade it has taken off both as a flatwater and wave-surfing sport. Plenty of people are overnight-tripping on SUPs, and using them for cross-training for core-strength and endurance.
