Out in the wilds of the British Columbia coastline, it’s a whole lot easier to make life-lasting memories if you’re sleeping well every night. In early June we headed to the west coast of Vancouver Island for a dream-trip backcountry surf mission—empty beaches, empty waves and night skies full of stars.
One of my favourite things about trips like this is setting up camp. All of my gear on this trip were old standards—tested and proven—except I brought a new sleeping bag, the Rab Neutrino.
A sleeping bag is among the most important items on a multi-day adventure, and while bag design hasn’t changed too dramatically over the past couple of decades, I need a versatile bag that is as good on the beach as it is in the mountains.

The Neutrino delivered. It’s lightweight and packable, a great bag for alpine missions, but also reinforced for toughness and durability on the base and foot regions. It’s warm and comfortable (even for someone who is 6’3”), and sidewall baffles add comfort and warmth for side-sleepers.
My favourite innovation in this Rab bag, however, is the zipper. How many times has the zipper snagged on my old sleeping bags and hindered the much-needed ease and flow of a midnight bathroom break? Too many to count. The Neutrino comes equipped with an anti-snag YKK zipper and zip guard that works every time. No more cursing and muttering, just free and easy exits out into the wild starry nights.
