Lightweight cushioning, reliable grip and a forgiving platform make the youth Altamesa one of the most versatile kids’ trail runners out there.

Built for Gravel Paths, Forest Trails and Everyday Wear

For young runners who split their time between schoolyard laps, gravel paths and mellow singletrack, the Youth Altamesa offers a combo of comfort, durability and trail-ready grip. Built as a lightweight everyday runner, the Altamesa borrows design cues from The North Face’s adult trail lineup, but scales down for younger adventurers who need cushioning and stability more than aggressive performance.

The first thing that stands out about the Youth Altamesa is the approachability. At just 185 grams per shoe, it’s light enough for all-day wear, but still substantial enough to handle dirt, roots and rocky park trails without feeling flimsy. The single-density EVA midsole delivers soft cushioning to absorb impact on harder surfaces like packed gravel and pavement transitions.

Unlike more aggressive trail shoes aimed at technical terrain, the Altamesa focuses on stability and versatility. The wide platform and lower-profile geometry help keep younger runners feeling planted, especially on uneven surfaces. The SURFACE CTRL outsole adds dependable grip on both wet and dry trails while avoiding the chunky, overbuilt feel of a mountain racing shoe. (The North Face describes it as optimized for “non-technical terrain” and mixed-track use.)

Well-Tuned Fit With Kid-Pleasing Features

The upper offers a nice balance of breathability and durability. The mesh keeps the shoe flexible and airy while the reinforced rand adds abrasion protection around the toe and lower sides. For kids who drag toes on rocks or scrape shoes during play, that extra protection should help extend the life of the shoe.

One of the smartest features is the bungee quick-lace system. Younger kids can tighten the fit quickly without stopping to tie laces and parents won’t constantly retie knots halfway through a hike or run. It also makes the shoe easy to pull on before school, camp or an impromptu trail outing.

Fit is true to size with moderate arch support and a well-tuned overall feel. The adult Altamesa has earned praise for its roomy toe box, plush cushioning and stable ride on medium-technical trails. The Youth Altamesa carries over much of that same philosophy in a kid-pleasing package.

Trail Performance With a Sustainable Focus

Sustainability is woven throughout the build. The shoe uses recycled polyester, recycled TPU and recycled rubber in several key areas. That doesn’t directly affect performance on trail; but clearly the Altamesa is more thoughtfully designed than many youth shoes that focus solely on price point.

The Altamesa is best suited to smoother terrain rather than steep, technical trails. The relatively few kids looking for aggressive mud traction or rock-plate protection for rugged routes may want something more specialized. For most young runners, the Altamesa should prove more than capable for hiking, trail running and general outdoor play.
