The upper blends durable leather and nylon with a padded collar and a convenient pull loop, while the speed-lace system and new heel-locking mechanism create a tailored feel. The heel lock-down is very reassuring and maintains even over the slipperiest, gnarliest rocky trails. It feels almost like a scaled-down mountaineering boot, but much lighter.
The BRUCE MID is very supportive and agile.
One note about the fit: Our tester found the tongue lace system was not comfortable out of the box. When the laces were tight over the tongue/collar, he experienced pressure on the lower tibia. But this slight discomfort vanished after several days of wear. (Also, the lace system allows for some customization, so you need to take a minute to find what works for your foot.) In any case, a break-in period is not unexpected in a rigid-construction boot that offers more than average protection.
Meanwhile, B-Tek Eco materials reduce environmental impact without sacrificing performance. Underfoot, a multi-directional, self-cleaning-lug rubber outsole partners with the IceBite Grip to offer significantly improved slip resistance on icy surfaces. (The IceBite works. We compared the BRUCE MID’s slip resistance against a pair of BOGS, and the BRUCE MID won by a mile.)
Adding to the mix is a TPU shank that provides torsional rigidity, a lightweight PU insulated midsole and a TPU external heel counter that incorporates a snowshoe ledge for added versatility.
Inside, Thermawick lining promotes thermal regulation and high-wick comfort, while a waterproof, breathable membrane offers dependable protection in wet conditions. Form-fitting B-Tek Foam adds softness and support. Together, these technologies create a balanced environment, rated Northern in Baffin’s warmth rating. (Polar is Baffin’s warmest rating, followed by Arctic, Tundra, then Northern.)
The BRUCE MID is intended for moderate activity levels—such as hiking, snowshoeing and commuting in cold-but-not-frigid conditions (temperatures ranging from 10°C to -10°C (50°F to 14°F), though individual warmth may vary).
Proven through real-world testing in locations as varied as the Swiss Alps, Machu Picchu, the Bruce Trail and Ontario’s Mountainview Conservation Area, the BRUCE MID is built to deliver comfortable and steady locomotion over rugged northern landscapes.
