Today’s Friday Flick highlights skier Adrien Grabinski’s passion for northwest BC’s Shames Mountain.
Adrien Grabinski is the ski patrol director and a caretaker at Shames Mountain, a small but mighty resort near the village of Terrace in northwest British Columbia.
The gargantuan backcountry, bottomless snow and massive lines first reeled in the young skier—and the community of tireless shredders sealed the deal. After a brief competitive career that took him to Switzerland and South America, Grabinski realized that racing wasn’t his true path and turned to big-mountain skiing.

As the Alberta-born 25-year-old attends to his many responsibilities at Shames—a cooperative recently profiled in Mountain Life—he also manages to be the hardest-charging skier (and also snowboarder) on the mountain.
“My entire life near the end of my competitive career was entirely dedicated to being faster by three-tenths of a second down a run that lasts less than two minutes,” he told Matthew Tufts on the Inter-Stellar blog. “Understanding all the variables and being confident that your observations are accurate is the only way to truly push your limits [in racing]. And that’s something I’ve directly carried into my approach to the backcountry and freeskiing.”

It was selected as a finalist at the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival and is currently showing on the Banff Film Festival World Tour.
