To develop Columbia Sportswear’s patented Omni-Heat Infinity advanced warming technology, Columbia’s designers looked back to the “space blankets” NASA developed for their space program in the mid-1960s. Columbia took this decades-old concept and reinvented it as the body-heat-reflective Omni-Heat Infinity fabric now available in more than one hundred products.
Earlier this year the Omni-Heat Infinity story came full circle and returned to space. The technology recently helped insulate the first U.S. lunar lander to successfully land on the surface of the Moon in 50 years through a partnership with space exploration company Intuitive Machines.

Omni-Heat Infinity: How Does It Work?
Humans—especially while we’re active—emit heat in the form of invisible infrared radiation. Omni-Heat Infinity’s metal fabrication reflects this precious heat back to us.
To fully develop this technology and refine the process, Columbia needed to tweak the fabric to retain maximum warmth without adversely affecting breathability. To achieve this, they designed the dot pattern to reflect body heat while the space between each dot allows the fabric to breathe.
This discontinuous pattern in the Omni-Heat Infinity fabric helps keep you warmer and more comfortable while you’re active in cold temperatures.

Inspiration from the Natural World: Omni-Heat Arctic
Adding yet another innovation to its warming technology, Columbia has just introduced a new insulation platform called Omni-Heat Arctic, available in fleece and puffer-style jackets. The concept is groundbreaking: Columbia’s research showed that solar absorption can play a critical role in staying warm, and a black jacket is not always warmer.
Tested at zero degrees in sunlight in the laboratory, research found that a regular black jacket will lose heat while our Omni-Heat™ Arctic jacket gains heat. We used those principles to develop two types of construction that feature Omni-Heat™ Arctic. The solar heat is then captured and stored within, mimicking the polar bear’s warmth protection system. This approach to innovation is called “biomimicry.”
The Arctic Crest™ Down Jacket
This puffer-style jacket has a translucent outer shell that allows solar energy to pass through the insulation and transit solar energy to the dark breathable lining.
