Backcountry (and frontcountry) cooks will be drooling at this deluxe nesting two-burner system. During our paddling trips we’ve most often used a single-burner stove and it has its advantages for ultralight travel—but one burner limits your options (and slows everything down if you need to boil or heat two separate elements of the meal).

You won’t have that problem with the Genesis Basecamp System. And you won’t find a more compact or well-designed two-burner system anywhere.

The Basecamp is an all-in-one setup and nests neatly to fit in a pack or drybag. If you’re cooking for large groups you can run three burners, thanks to the JetLink adapter that allows you to attach a single-burner Jetboil stove or a Luna Satellite Burner.

But you may not need that additional burner. The Genesis Basecamp’s 5-liter Jetboil FluxPot and 10-inch ceramic-coated nonstick fry pan offer pretty much everything you need to set new gourmet benchmarks for three to five diners.

The 10,000 BTU heating system boils water in just over three minutes so you can sort out coffee needs quickly. And the burners will perform consistently down to 20 degrees F (-6 degrees C).

The Basecamp really shines if you’re making a dish that requires simmering. It delivers a consistent low flame for finessing sauces (and to avoid burning pancakes). Plus: the wide-range dials make it harder to accidentally turn the burner off when simmering. We also found the burners very fuel-efficient.

It is easy to clean the Basecamp stoves: simply remove the grates and wipe down. (Press the two prongs on the side to release the grates from the housing.)

We also like the manual lever ignition switches so you can avoid sketchy (i.e., lighter or match) ignitions. And the pot lid’s built-in sieve is essential to avoid pasta-draining disasters!

Our only quibble, apart from the slightly steep price tag, is the plastic windscreen, which fits around both burners and stays in place, but is a little low to be effective. However, this is a small detail. Overall, the Basecamp seems to be overbuilt for durability and can handle rough treatment, which is worth paying a bit more.
