DJI’s new Power 500 and 1000 will quick-charge everything from household appliances and devices to drone batteries.

Drawing on over a decade of research and development, the Power Series will fast-charge DJI drone batteries and meet the demands of common household appliances—not to mention cameras, phones, flashlights, computers, power tools, RV fridges and any other gadgets you need juiced up on the regular.

The Power 500

The Power 500 and 1000 are designed for anyone from van lifers to outdoor enthusiasts to content creators—and homeowners who want a compact, quiet solution for hydro outages.

The Power Series offers two recharging modes: Fast Recharge Mode enables an 80 per cent charge in just 50 minutes, and a full charge in 70 minutes. If you’ve done much filming with drones, you know how quickly they consume battery power; quick charging is essential in the field and will boost the productivity of content creators (and eliminate the dreaded ‘battery anxiety’). Both power stations feature the customized Power SDC fast charging function for DJI drones and can connect to a DJI Power Solar Panel Adapter Module (MPPT) to support solar charging.

The DJI Power 500 boasts a 512 Wh capacity and maximum output power of 1000W, while the DJI Power 1000 is backed by a 1024 Wh capacity with a massive 2200W output power. Both connect to a range of accessories and feature dual USB-C two-way ports with a maximum output of 100W and 140W each, respectively.

We demoed the Power 500—the compact version better suited for human-powered trips. Slightly bigger than your average toaster oven, it will fit inside a kayak hatch, in a canoe or on the deck of a SUP (inside a drybag). (You can buy a protective padded carry case for the Power 1000, but not for the 500.) For a paddling trip with power demands for phones, cameras, drones, tablets and lights, a Power 500 will serve multiple users over a couple of days, and longer if you bring the foldable Zignes 100W solar panel along to top it up.

The Power 1000 is also portable but its larger size and heavier weight limit it to home use or vehicle- or powerboat-based trips. If you’re looking to power up multiple drones for extended shoots, or you’re looking for appliance or power-tool support, the 1000 is a better bet.

But we like the easy portability of the 500. It packs a lot of punch for its size and holds its charge for the long haul. According to the DJI specs for the 500, it will charge a mobile phone 28 times, while the 1000 will charge a phone 57 times. The 500 will power up a drone 6 times; the 1000, 12 times.

The 500 is easy to pick up and carry one-handed with its top handle. (The 1000 requires a two-handed lift, with handles on either end.) For outdoorists, the 500 is indispensable when you need power on gram-counting self-propelled trips. The 1000 is just as indispensable for power needs closer to your home, power boat, sailboat or vehicle. Both units provide reliable and long-lasting off-grid power in a durable, user-friendly package.
