mots :: Charlotte Boileau-Domingue.

Discovering the Joy of Highlining

words :: Charlotte Boileau-Domingue.

As I followed the whoops of joy echoing through the shoreline of Bas-Saint-Laurent, they led me to a gutsy group named Les Funambules Modernes (Modern Tightrope Walkers). My unquenchable thirst for finding the best angle to capture Quebec’s beauty took me high into the mountains to embark on a hair-raising new adventure: highlining. I learned that highlining is much more than an extreme sport: It’s a lifestyle.

To master the art of highlining, seasoned vets must not only have impeccable balance to keep themselves upright while standing on a piece of webbing less than two inches wide, but enough mental strength to walk across deep canyons while perched hundreds of metres in the air. To perform their daring feats, highliners are attached to a short length of rope tied to a climbing harness, so that in the event of a slip, they only fall about three feet. The brave souls then walk across the sky for at least 50 metres, and to my surprise, up to an astonishing distance of two kilometres (a new world record set in Quebec in 2019).

Highlining remains a largely unknown sport, which makes practising it all the more challenging. Fortunately, there are some areas in Kamouraska, Saint-Alban and Asbestos that offer outdoor thrill-seekers a safe haven to practise their dizzying sport while surrounded by stunning landscapes.

From VEM, summer/fall ’20.

#ThrowbackThursday 👉Rhythmic raindrops pounded on the truck’s canopy. Wet snow avalanches growled down the slopes, and the river echoed its roar—evidence the Nass Valley’s spirit was very alive. FRIDAY FLICK 💥 This past March, speed mountaineer Benedikt Böhm @benediktboehm rocked a five-hour sea-to-summit expedition up Mount Parnassus in central Greece. Starting at sea level on his road bike at the village of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth, he climbed up to an altitude of 2.414 metres. #linkinbio to watch the film!
I had no idea what to expect from this trip, neither from bikepacking, a fancy term for cycle touring and a sport I’d never done before, nor from Kyrgyzstan, a country most people cannot find on a map. Carl, who I’d only just met recently after moving to Canada—I’d flagged him down after backcountry skiing after seeing his Montana license plate—had invited me on this trip while on a mountain bike ride. I said no. A few weeks later I figured, “Why not?”

"@normhann and I lashed paddleboards to the roof of his truck and headed north along the Island Highway, towards Telegraph Cove. Norm had invited me to tag along on a commercial paddleboard group he would be guiding in the Broughton Archipelago. Despite a long history of SUP expeditions, I harboured some reservations."
