mots :: Pat Wells.

You know the deal—sports gear, cycling gear in particular, that once held great value gets tossed into a corner in the garage. We’ve replaced it with something newer, and we shun it and forget it. But what if that gear was given a second chance to be reborn as something shiny, new and totally unique?

The idea of reinvigorating my white Giro shoes—no longer very white anymore—came to me after seeing on Instagram a growing trend in custom paint jobs for cycling shoes. I reached out to Marie-Josée Lapalme, an amazing artist, and convinced her to give my shoes a second life.

Using special paint required for leather, she immersed herself in the project after I gave her a general idea of what I wanted. The resulting work of art exceeded my expectations, to the point where I now value my shoes for the eye-catching and unique items they are. Fellow riders take notice too, and I often hear things like, “Wow! Where did you get those shoes?’’ Once relegated to the discard pile, they are now objects of envy.

I didn’t stop there. I dug out a 12-year-old Felt cyclocross bike with an outdated colour scheme. I always loved this bike, which was my go-to every spring and fall when I got tired of sharing the asphalt with cars on my road bike. So I contacted my friend Joey Sivilla, who has a custom paint and repair business for carbon bikes. We decided to go with a military look because I always thought of my bike as a trusty, sturdy tank. Joey said, “I had the privilege of obtaining access to the genuine Royal Canadian Air Force paint codes. The solid black, olive green and sand beige always stuck with me, and I jumped on the opportunity to use them again.’’ Joey incorporated a nice personal detail: a black, glossy star on the horizontal tube, with a galaxy of stars within, to honor a lost friend.

These two rehabilitation projects made me reflect on the many things we give up on long before their usefulness has expired. Perhaps all that’s needed to bring them back to life is the touch of an artist. If you have an old pair of cycling shoes or a neglected bike, get in touch with a local artist to apply a little creative TLC and convert old gear into newly vibrant works of art. It worked for me.

From Vie en montagne, summer-fall ’20.
