We go behind the photo with Paul Bride. Words :: Sarah Bulford.

* * *

We often hear the phrase “a picture says a thousand words” but we don’t always mention the feelings or vibes a single image can give us. Something that serves as a portal back to simpler times.

In our latest issue of Vie en montagne, we feature a captivating image by photographer, Paul Bride. Two old-school ski bums, Triple G (Kyle Graveley) and Mr. Cat (Francois LaFrance) enjoying an afternoon stroll after tearing up their backyard in Edelweiss, Quebec. We love this image because it captures the true essence of skiing. Fancy gear and cool tricks aside, skiing is all about good times with your homies.

We caught up with Paul to get some insight on the story behind this image and the hype that followed after it was published.

Tell us a bit about this shot.

As for the image itself I took it walking back to one of their homes after a morning on the hill. No lift lines or crowds in these parts. Did I mention they’re cousins?

What inspired you to capture these two?

Honestly, it’s like getting the opportunity to photograph real-life cartoon characters. It’s so authentic, you can’t make this stuff up.

We heard they were signing autographs at the hill—tell us about this.

The two of them are known quite well throughout the Edelweiss valley so when word spread about their image being published in Vie en montagne it was kind of a big deal. It made for an awesome moment and follow-up image.

We love that this pays homage to the ski bum life/dirtbag lifestyle. What kind of feedback have you received about this shot?

The feedback has been great. It’s a fun shot with colorful characters that people have been curious about.

What do you love about skiing and the culture at Edelweiss and what brings you back to that area?

I have asked myself that many times on a long flight back to Vancouver. The hill is tiny, it’s cold and icy, there really isn’t much going on, I asked the boys to help me with an appropriate reply to answer your question. Mr. Cat replied: “Hahahahahahahah fuck dude it’s the Triple F [French Felony Forest]. It’s the strangest, most offbeat little piece of paradise on earth.” Pretty tough to compete with that.

This image really simplifies the joy of skiing without all the bells and whistles of fancy gear and cool tricks. What is one thing you love about old school ski culture?

I love how animated it is.

FRIDAY FLICK 💥 This past March, speed mountaineer Benedikt Böhm @benediktboehm rocked a five-hour sea-to-summit expedition up Mount Parnassus in central Greece. Starting at sea level on his road bike at the village of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth, he climbed up to an altitude of 2.414 metres. #linkinbio to watch the film!
I had no idea what to expect from this trip, neither from bikepacking, a fancy term for cycle touring and a sport I’d never done before, nor from Kyrgyzstan, a country most people cannot find on a map. Carl, who I’d only just met recently after moving to Canada—I’d flagged him down after backcountry skiing after seeing his Montana license plate—had invited me on this trip while on a mountain bike ride. I said no. A few weeks later I figured, “Why not?”

"@normhann and I lashed paddleboards to the roof of his truck and headed north along the Island Highway, towards Telegraph Cove. Norm had invited me to tag along on a commercial paddleboard group he would be guiding in the Broughton Archipelago. Despite a long history of SUP expeditions, I harboured some reservations."
To date, more than 6,000 people have summitted Everest, the highest point on Earth at 8,848.86 metres of elevation above sea level. And only a tiny handful of those climbers have been Black.
