The Matterhorn, one of the most recognizable mountains in the world, has not seen much foot traffic over the past few weeks—and that’s probably a good thing. With Switzerland being one of the hardest-hit countries by the COVID-19 pandemic, the citizens have been ordered to shelter in place.

To relieve some stress and send a message to the locals, the team over at Zermatt, the resort that lies beneath the iconic mountain, has done something special for the citizens of the region. Each evening between sunset and 11 PM, the resort has shone has a massive light on the mountain, first displaying messages such as the advisory ‘#stayathome’, the Swiss flag, and more.

Yesterday, Switzerland became the second country in Europe to declare more than 10,000 infections—an achievement that nobody is proud of. In time’s like these, it’s best to appreciate the mountains from a distance—and what better way to do it than with a light show on an iconic peak stands over 14,600 ft? —ML
