Early Season is ON in ON

words & photos :: Colin Field

While the majority of Ontario’s ski industry was busy pressing flesh indoors in Mississauga at the Toronto Ski + Snowboard show, Ontario was getting dumped on. And sure that, “messy, wet commute in Toronto,” must have sucked. But the skiing in Southern Georgian Bay most certainly did not. Up to 40 centimetres gathered on the Niagara Escarpment in lovely blower pow. As the sun popped out and we dropped in on some earned turns (the resorts won’t open for at least another two weeks), we were pleasantly surprised to learn that the snow was awesome. When do you ever get a foot of fluffy snow AND sunshine in Ontario? Never.

Please excuse the gear (rusty edges, sunglasses and our wives’ helmets), but skiing in Ontario on November 8th is supposed to suck. We hadn’t even thought of tuning our skis yet. Let alone tracking down our goggles.

For those of us with a ‘flexible Friday’ work schedule, the truth is, nobody earned any money today. But fuck it, who cares? We had faceshots for lunch! And apres pints at Northwinds. Bring it on ON!) —ML

  1. I think I watched the one in the red jacket do some turns in front of the Osler lodge around lunchtime! So jealous.

  2. Wow, just wow pow. Legendary day, looks like an, “I could count those days on one hand” kind of day… Nov 8, who knew!!! OP crew!

  3. Would have loved to have joined this party! How can I hook up with some others interested in doing a little ‘backcountry-esque’ exploring in Ontario?
