Cult Classic Patagonia Film Resurfaces from Antiquity

Think about all your friends, everyone has a story of how they meet their current or old boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse.  Then there’s that one friend who simply has the best story of all time and it’s retold over and over, “So there I was selling ice cream to Trumps 4th cousin…”.  Businesses also have a story of their inception, some better than others.

Now, is it just us or does Patagonia and Yvon Chouinard have a claim on the best story?  Tales of an obsession and simply needing to make tools to accomplish their impossible goals on walls and in the mountains.  Creating pitons and carabiners which eventually morphed into Black Diamond and then creating Patagonia, all because they needed equipment that didn’t exist.

Patagonia has just released a well known, though seldom seen, film from this era called “Mountain of Storm”.  In 1968 Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, Dick Dorworth and Chris Jones set off on an 8,000 mile journey to El Chalten, Argentina to climb Fitz Roy.  They filmed the whole journey on a 16mm Bolex showing it to friends when they returned.  Becoming an underground classic, it’s being shown across North America and will be released digitally on Oct 9th.  Until you find a screening or see the full release, enjoy the trailer below:
