On September 1st, hundreds of racers of all ages participated in fun-for-all ages Valley To Peak Race in Whistler, BC presented by The North Face. The gruelling course stretched from the Creekside Base to the Peak of Whistler with 22.5 km of total distance, and over 1,800 meters of vertical gain.

Taking the top spot for the Men’s 30-39 Category (and the fastest overall) was Kristopher Swanson, with his good friend and training partner, Eric Carter, a mere two minutes behind. Carter, who races in the World Cup Ski Mountaineering circuit, typically races in the Valley To Peak for it’s unique atmosphere.  Living in Squamish, Carter spends his winter’s in the area skiing, and training for his rigorous schedule of ski mountaineering races.  “It’s kind of my home course being at Whistler. I do a lot of training in the winter on the mountain so I know it pretty well. It’s a fun course it’s somewhat similar to ski mountaineering. And it’s well organized”, Carter recounts. As for the difficulty?  “It’s difficult because it’s not a straight up race. Most of the races I do you don’t actually run, you just walk fast. This one is different because of the way it winds up the mountain bike trails. So the running aspect is actually tough for me, and I think that’s where Chris got me—he’s quite a good runner.”, Carter explains.

Along with the full 22.5 km course, there is a shorter 10 km loop, a 3 km loop as well as a 1 km kids loops which was new this year. With age categories for everyone, The Valley to Peak Race has become an event for the whole family. Keep an eye out in the spring for dates for next year’s race—but we’d recommend you start your training now.  For results from each category and a photo gallery, scroll down.-ML
