As athletes and recreationalists push deeper and deeper into the mountains, we have undoubtedly seen an uptick in avalanche incidents over the past 20 years. While our knowledge of snow science and our rescue technology has come a long way over the years, there is still a great deal of information which is unknown. A potential answer to understanding how avalanches work? 3D modelling.
Johan Gaume, a researcher at Ecole Polytechnique Federale De Lausanne in Switzerland, along with a team of 3D modelling experts based in California have created the first realistic and scientifically accurate recreation of a snow slab avalanche. While this is only a small, small step toward fully understanding the complex and varied science behind avalanches, it is certainly an intriguing development.
