We tested the new Salomon X ALP MTN GTX in some rugged, technically challenging terrain and were not disappointed. We were amazed at how light this boot felt for the durability and support it offered. Through scrambled rock and slippery roots, the traction held true, and the upper stayed dry through snow trunching and even submersion in creek beds and trail puddles.

GTX1

One of our favourite features is the narrow, grippy and practically bullet-proof toe box. It provides for a stable, agile scramble without feeling like a hockey skate. And the sole edging held on to the steep, narrow, lateral cross sections like a charm.

GTX3

From Salomon: The X ALP MTN GTX® is an extra light, leather member of the X ALP family, delivering an ideal combination of agility, precision and support that mountain enthusiasts want for ridge ascents, easy climbing sections, and glacier crossings.

GTX2

  • Edging precision Patented 3D Edging Chassis maintains a rigid lateral edge for climbing rocks, edging in snow or soft conditions, etc. While maintaining forefoot flexibility.
  • Protection High top construction, full Gore-Tex® bootie and two layers of compressed EVA ensure protection from cold temperatures, weather, and rugged environments.
  • Durability 1.5mm Nubuck leather upper, protective toe and heel caps, and mud-guard ensure these boots withstand years of abuse.
  • Weight 620 g

The MTN GTX is stiff enough to handle technical terrain and ridge and glacier crossings, but not too stiff to sacrifice comfort. If you’re looking for a great all-around, lightweight boot, with all the features and durability, check out the GTX.

There is a trend—mostly with tourism organizations and marketing departments, but travel journalists have been on board for a while now too… and the trend is to use the phrase “untouched wilderness” when writing about remote areas like the Skeena Mountains of northern B.C.
