Delivering essential protection for minimal weight, the Arc’teryx Psiphon SL Pullover is geared for the harsh environments encountered in rock and alpine climbing. Constructed from a superlight, densely woven nylon/elastane blend fabric, Nylaz, the Psiphon delivers superior abrasion resistance. The fabric helps mitigate the effects of wind and precipitation, but is air permeable and stretchy enough for comfort on the move.
Shifting conditions require adaptable features. The Psiphon’s Gossamera nylon hood is helmet-compatible, provides wind and weather protection and features a quick one-handed adjustment. When not deployed, a unique hidden snap system secures the hood in windy conditions, but keeps it right at hand should the weather shift. If not needed at all, the hood is completely stowable. Other seemingly simple details are carefully geared to maximize the Psiphon’s performance without impacting the climber’s freedom and line of sight. The deep front zip is designed to allow for easy removal and rapid ventilation, HemLock inserts secure the pullover under a harness, and the stretch gusset cuffs can be quickly pushed up while climbing.
In vertical situations, every gram and cubic centimeter climbers carry is a burden. Minimizing is essential, and Arc’teryx put a high level of focus on choosing materials and winnowing features to the purest essentials to save weight and maximize compressibility. The result is a full-coverage hoody that packs to the size of a climbing shoe.
The Psiphon SL Pant is also new this year. The Cresta material is a stretch woven textile made from a combination of nylon for durability and elastane for stretch. It delivers the high level of abrasion resistance climbers require, and offers stretch performance for freedom of movement on the rock. The material also has a high level of air permeability. This allows air to circulate for effective thermal regulation and moisture management in high exertion situations and warmer conditions. The hand pockets are lined with mesh to further increase ventilation while wearing a climbing harness or during the approach/descent.
The Psiphon also features aggressive, climbing focused articulation and a gusseted crotch. All work together to help the body move more effortlessly while climbing.
The waistband secures with a snap and a low profile webbing belt with metal hook closure. This provides a secure fit and lies comfortably under a harness. A webbing loop on the back of the waistband can serve to secure a chalk bag while bouldering. The thigh pocket is accessible while wearing a harness, and the other pockets lay flat for minimal irritation. The trim fit minimizes loose fabric and helps improve the line of sight to the climbing surface. While designed for climbing this softshell pant has a slightly looser fit than some and a straighter lower leg providing a fit that works equally well for both climbing and casual use.
