1% for the Planet Ambassador and mountain unicyclist Kris Holm rides in some risky places, including the Bhutan Himalaya and the edge of the Great Wall of China. “You practice first where it’s okay to fall,” said Holm in a recent interview on Global BC. “It’s not about taking risks where you feel lucky to have survived. It’s about putting yourself in a position where it’s absorbing and engaging to get through something, and manage that risk.”
Vancouver resident Holm was the first one-wheeler to bring his sport to a wider audience over the last decade through film, television and magazine features. It may be a niche sport, but it hinges on something we all should strive for: balance. “Unicycles are almost a metaphor for balance,” said Holm. “You’re balanced with your mind, and you’re balanced with your body.”
As a member of 1% for the Planet, Holm’s company supports conservation of wilderness areas and environmental education for children, among other worthy causes.
